27 March 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 27th [March 1862]. I was practising at about 12 AM when Montie walked into the schoolroom—he said he was sorry we cd not go to his dinner. He called Ecca out of the room wishing to speak to her alone—it was I afterwards found that he wanted me to go down to Uffington with him next Saturday– He stayed luncheon and after lunch asked me for my decision. I told him I dared not go as the M. I am sure would never have heard of such a thing—he then got on his horse and rode to Richd. Blan: & Con: went over in poney carriage– I went to Roehampton with Ecca and coming back saw Montie in a towering rage having been very vexed with Ria’s reception of him and giving up all idea of the dinner. He then without stopping bid us adieu and rode back to town. Lady Shepley & Mrs James Bontius came to enquire after Ivory as she had seen mention of his illness in some of the papers. She stopped and spoke to me outside the gate. Then Ecca & I went in to see Mrs Cameron, found her at home and congratulated her upon having let her house, having arranged to take a walk with Mrs C. at 5 PM. We went in to take some tea. Ecca was too tired—so I alone went with Mrs C. to Putney. It began to rain before we got back and dinner was nearly over when I came in– Played short game of backgammon and went to bed early.
