2 April 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Wednesday. 2nd [April 1862]. A telegram came intimating that Schr was on his way home. I went over in the poney carriage to fetch Connie & found that they at Spring Lodge had received a telegram to say he was coming and on account of a report that Lord Fitzhardinge was dead wh turned out to be untrue– As Richard was gone to Uff: to spend the night Maria begged me to remain with her at Richd and go back the next day so Connie went without me—we had tea dinner in her sitting room and went to our rooms at 10½. Susan came & sat with me & I wrote some letters for her—we talked till 12 oclock– It rained hard all day.
