28 June 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 28th [June 1862]. I went into breakfast just at the same time as Merthyr found he had ridden in to Wimborne & had lost a pocket book. He found it however by 11 oclock. He had had it cried in the town. I wrote something for the P.T. & then went up to print till luncheon time– After luncheon I went up & printed till 3½– Then I went out in the poney basket carriage with Connie. We went round by the convent & Wimborne. Had tea and was just starting off to Wimborne in the dogcart when I met Temmy coming down the avenue and so came in with her– Did not get dinner till past 9– After dinner had some fun with Merthyr. I had a bath and went to bed at 11. But owed to a row in the childrens room & having to call in Temmy I did not get to bed till past twelve– Heard from Mr Layard. Heard of the death of Gen. Bruce & defeat of the Northerners in America–
