1 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 1st July [1862]. Got up at about 8½. Connie brought me some little knick knacks for birthday presents. At breakfast Ivory passed me round 6 sovs. in succession. Which I took thinking it to be his fun. Then Merthyr came down and having showed him what Ivory had done—he did ditto & turned out £2..4..6– I tried to make him take it back but he would not. Schr also emptied his pockets but as it was only 2/ I returned it. Afterwards Ivory asked me wh I preferred the money or some other present—wh last I decided upon. We did some printing in the morng & finished the 9th no. of the Portland Times. I had settled to go out walking with Temmy but somehow or other missed her– I went to enquire at Mrs Pynes for her but not finding her went back to Mrs Allens– I sat there some time chatting and she promised me a plate she has belonging to Qn Adelaide who once lived here. I am to have it when she dies– I then came home & found Temmy come home– Had some tea & wrote letters– Montie & Arthur came down by 7 train from town– At dinner Montie told us how ill Arthur had been the night before and how they had been obliged to call in a doctor. I played in the eveng. None of the boys remained in the hall so I retired at about 11. but talked a long while to Elizabeth who put me to bed–
