2 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 2nd [July 1862]. Down very late (¼ 10)—and found everyone had finished breakfast. I then went with Montie to see the quails in servant hall—there were 50 in a cage. We then went to the study where Arthur & Merthyr also came and we talked a long time and had some fun. Montie making fun of B & C’s german translations– I then went up for an hour to the Tool room & did a little work– Montie gave us some presents Mrs Bertie sent us—me a pair of ear rings– After luncheon I wrote to Felicia & sat drawing or idling till 4 when I got a letter from Car and then went out walking with Blanche and Temmy– We went to Mrs Whitelocks and then to the Pynes. We had some tea there– Mr Pyne was there– We called at the Warehams and then came home. As we were coming in we met Montie and Ivory returning from cricket practice and then Montie & I played “croquet”– We played 2 games & he beat me each time. I had just time to get tidy and despatch my letters when it was dinner time. I wrote to Mrs Tennyson & sent her a copy of the Portland Times– We had rather fun at dinner Montie teased Miss K. dreadfully about Mr Ball. After dinner the M. played the “Barbieré” & Ivor whistled. Montie & Ivor sang—and then Arthur sang the Old Sexton. They sang together till nearly 12—and then the M packed us off to bed–
