3 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 3rd [July 1862]. Late for breakfast. Montie and I sang together and then I went up and read till luncheon– Montie teased Temmy & Arthur at lunch & had some fun. I then went and laid down on my bed—feeling very tired I fell asleep for about ½ hour. Did a little composing & sent off the No. 6 of the P.T.– Went out with Temmy at 5– We called at Miss Warehams & the school– Then at Mrs Pynes—we had a cup of tea there and a long discussion about boots. We then went on to Mrs Whitelocks but did not go in—came home by the drive– When I returned I found Trenfield had returned from town & she gave me a set of china things for my dressing table from the “united household” at Spring Lodge– They are modern Copeland– Montie and Arthur went in to dinner before Ivor came down wh rather displeased him but with his usual kindness he said nothing. Nobody talked much at dinner & every body seemed more or less in the dumps– After dinner I went into the smoking room & saw Montie’s enamels—amongst which was a watch wh belonged to the mother of the 1st Napoleon– Arthur & Ivor sang & Connie accompanied– I went off to bed—having to be up so early in the morng as Schr wants me to go to Melbury with him—at 10½–
