4 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 4th [July 1862]. Got up at 8½ started at 10½ in the poney carriage with Schr to Melbury to see there Glyns– We went by Blandford & Ranstone– The view from that road of the vale of Blackmoor is indeed wonderful—perhaps more wonderful than beautiful. It was too flat almost for my taste– We met Sir Edward Baker on the road—he stopped, and came and spoke to us– We arrived at Melbury at about 1—and had some luncheon– After luncheon we went round to look at the garden and then to see the Church remaining out on the lawn till tea time—5½– We had some tea & started on our way home. We came back by the Upper Road and the view from the top of the down was more extensive than from the other– It began to spit a little with rain just before we got to Blandford & continued all the way home, but not eno’ to wet one– We got home at 8½ just in time for dinner– We found that Arthur had gone off to London to play a cricket match with the [illegible word] somewhere in Essex—& that Montie had gone out to drill the Volunteers at Wimborne. He came back before we had quite finished dinner. In the eveng Ivor & Montie sang duets together & I played the accompaniment– We played till 11½ and then went up to the Tool room & corrected some type till 1 oclock when I went to bed– As all the maids had gone to bed I put myself to bed and went to sleep at about 2—but slept very badly–
