11 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 11th [July 1862]. Slept till 9 & then had breakfast in bed. Went down to the study where Ecca and Blan: were composing something for the P.T. I then went out on the terrace to see Arthur row about on the fountain in his little canoe. I then set to work to finish Kates shirt and had quite finished it by 4 oclock. I then took Temmy out for a drive in Luffs little poney carriage. We went to Moretown to see the other old Pond—found him very ill, saw Mrs Whitelock on the road, spoke a few words with her and they went on the road by the new cottages and round by the Poole road, Oakley calling at Mrs Hayes with a message on our way home. We then went on to the Pynes where we found Connie, we went on to see Miss Card and went back to take some tea with the Pynes. We came home in time for me to write 2 letters and send off Kates shirt– Schr was expected home but did not arrive– I had a bad fit of coughing & was very sick. We went up to the printing room—printed off one page and set up and printed a proof of another. Elizabeth put me to bed—as she was doing my hair she suddenly said “Hist! There is a mouse on the window sill”– We consulted in a whisper how best to kill it—we thought of drowning it but at last decided upon killing it with the poker– Eliza: took the poker, advanced carefully, brandished her firearm and came down crack—not on the mouse but only on the knob with wh one opens the window & wh she had mistaken for a mouse. We laughed so that the M. heard us & got up to know what was the noise– I went to bed at 12½—very rainy night. It was so cold driving, not the least like July!
