13 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 13th [July 1862]. Rather late– Church twice– Mr Daniel in the morng text about the publican & Pharisee– Luff went off to Cardiff– Mr Williams of Longfleet preached in afternoon extemporary the text from the witch of Endor– It was a very good sermon and it is surprising with what fluency he preached. After church I sat on the bowling green & had tea and wrote letters. I then got the keys and went to the top of the tower taking Elizabet with me– I then took her out with me to get some gooseberries in the kitchen garden and then we went into the Queens walk and picked wild flowers– When I came home I made up a beautiful bouquet with them and put them into a bowl in the hall– At dinner time I naturally went and sat down in Ivors place when the M. says to me Mr Schr will carve– I at first pretended not to hear but she repeating it & altho’ Blanche said “There is nothing to carve” I had to move– There was a tremendous gloom over the whole of dinner in consequence and we all went off to bed directly after. I took a bath and so eluded the M. who hung about my room & the passages on purpose to catch me. I slept with Blanche and the M did not come near. Had a letter from Blossett in the morng.
