30 July 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 30th [July 1862]. I was dreadfully late this morng but most of the others were so. I played Zampa with FEB in morng & then we all played croquet which as the sun was broiling gave me a headache—the consequence was I was obliged to lie down the whole afternoon. Monty came up to my room at about 5 & Ecca, Beckie came to see after his finger. We got 2 leeches & after a deal of trouble leeched his finger wh did a great deal of good. I went down to dinner & my head got much better. Kate was obliged to leave dinner she felt so unwell– She overtired herself riding to Bourne—where they all went & met the Taylors and Mrs Cameron– Kate however returned to dinner but I had great trouble to get her up to her room & undressing her put her to bed. Merthyr came into the room & just saved her from fainting by putting cold water on her head. I played Zampa again with FEB & then we all went and walked on the terrace where we stayed till bed time. I went & sat in Blossetts room for some time & wrote after till late–
