1 August 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 1st August [1862]. I went out in the morng with Bloss and we got grapes from the garden. We all sat under the tent tree till 12 oclock and then started off for Bournemouth. We got to Bourne at 1½ and bathed the 1st thing. Kate & Felicia did not bathe. When I came out of the machine I found that KA & FEB with Arthur and Ivor had gone in to luncheon at the Belle Vue whilst we had luncheon on the sands—wh put us all out very much and we started home at abt 4– We went round to Henry Taylors the poet (Van Artevelde) and saw him—also Mrs Cameron who is staying with them. The question of my going in Monties yacht was raised but the M. refused. She went out on the terrace but soon returned for Ivor—who also fetched Monty & Arthur & we were very much alarmed. We afterwards found out that they had mistaken a heap of burning weeds for men with dark lanterns—we did not go to bed till after 12. Kate came & stayed some time with me.
