20 August 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 20th [August 1862]. In the morng Granville brought me up a note fm Lady Louisa asking us all to go to Parkstone & take tea there– We arranged to go, the day being lovely– We started at about 2. We 3 without Ecca and stopping at the Pynes picked up Kathie—also May—Blanche & I went in the sociable with them & Connie drove Lady L. & Ethel– The rest went with Mr P in the dog cart. When we got to the banks we ordered the things to be taken to the “Hive” Lord Sidney Osborne’s place and went & bathed. We got Lord S.G.O’s bathing cabin open and had to rush across the sand a good way but it was beautifully smooth and nice bathing– I, Connie & May bathed. After bathing we went and had tea in S.G.O.’s garden and were vexed to find the tea all smoked but we contented ourselves with jams & devoured a whole loaf between us– We drove home at about 7 & I drove back in the dog cart with Mr P. We went round by Oakley on purpose to drop Cyril who returned to school– After dinner I read Dickens to the M. When I went to bed I fd a letter from Mr Tennyson containing 3 photographs of Tennyson one for each of us—which we prize exceedingly–
