14 September 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 14th [September 1862]. It rained hard all day but we notwithstanding went twice to church. We had Mr Daniel in the morng and Mr Ponsonby in the afternoon. It rained so hard that we could not go out at all– After eveng service we walked in the conservatory and then went up to the top of the tower– That being done and having still some time before dinner Ivor proposed taking us to see the hot air chamber. We got some lights and then went down to the cellars and through dark arched passages till we got to a small white washed room filled with large iron pipes and the entrance being very narrow we had some little difficulty in getting in. We all marked our names on the ceiling with the candle and after groping about came up again. I played in the eveng. (Airs & Variations) & we went to bed pretty early.
