23 September 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 23rd [September 1862]. I copied music all the morng in the library and Maria sat with me. Lady L. & Mr Pon: called in the morng and told us of a harvest home feast which was to take place at Kinson in the afternoon. At luncheon Maria proposed to go and Ivor said he would go. He drove Maria in the poney carriage & Car, Temmy & I came in the large carriage. When we got there we entered a large field thro’ a triumphal arch made of straw & wheat. It was very cleverly done by a thatcher with a star in the centre and a miniature stack. A verse of Scripture was done on it in apples & chestnuts. We helped the children to the tea and then watched the games (cricket, Aunt Sally, racing in sacks etc–) Ivor left before we did. We left Maria at Mrs Pynes on our way home and the rest came in to 5 ocl: tea. Playing and singing in eveng.
