29 September 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 29th [September 1862]. I did not get down till very late on account of my having Ria’s maid to doctor my hair. At about 1 ocl. I, Ecca & Ria started in the sociable for the Hive. We picked up Gran: & May on the way– Blanche & Con: went in the dog cart with Edward. Before we arrived at our destination it began to rain & when we arrived there we found Mr Pon: had secured a room in Mrs Sturts farm where we had our luncheon. We found that Lady L. had brought Mr Francis with her. After luncheon we went to the Hive where we saw one of the Miss Osbornes and then we went down to the sea. We found Ld SGO just starting for a sail—but he sent the boat to fetch Mr Pon: & children & Maria who previously took off her “Carolina”– Blanche, May and I then bathed and by that time Lady Sidney had come down. She is a jolly old soul in a round poky bonnet & with a scrap of crinoline but most good natured. The bathing was excellent. The sailing party soon returned & we all started to come home. I changed places with Lady L. & took care of the children– I told them stories and some of them fell asleep. Got home in time for dinner. I read out loud in the eveng.
