24 October 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 24th [October 1862]. Was so late that I had only time to practise. I had breakfast in bed & Montie came in as I was just dressed and waited about– Mckensie came from Wimborne to see about Cons: photos. At one Con: & I went in the poney carriage to take Monty & Ivor, who were shooting, their luncheon. We had great difficulty in finding them but after Con: & I had run over a few fields we found them and Connie went back to fetch round the carriage. When they arrived we spread some wraps in a turnip field and fell too. Whilst were eating there appeared a most beautiful rainbow the colours of which were more vivid than I had ever seen before and shed a reflection on a cloud behind, it then began to rain hard and we drove quickly home—where we arrived at 4. I sat in the study and practised my concertina and then we went to tea. Monty came to tea and he, I & Con: sat talking and chaffing till dinner time. I then dressed and after waiting some time Luff came and said Ivor was not well eno’ to come to dinner so Mon: took the top of the table—at din: we talked a great deal about the Ker Seymers. After din: the M. went up to see Ivor & Monty called in Luff and made him have some sherry. We heard that Ivor’s hunter was dying having “staked” itself in opening a gate. I read a little to the M. & spent most of the time with Ivor who was very sick and had old Druitt. To bed at 12.
