25 October 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 25th [October 1862]. Was down very late & had my breakfast brought up to me. I went down at about eleven & began to see after my screen in the study—the M. came in and told me to come and take a lesson of Mackensie (from Wim:). He showed us how to take negatives till luncheon. After lunch I went up to the laundry with Blan: to see her ironing Ivors ties. I then went down to Mackensie and he taught me how to photograph. I did 2 negatives & they came out pretty well– I came in and sat with Temmy in the study (she was not well) & practised my concertina. We then had tea and I went and sat in the smoking room with Ivor whilst the others went to the singing. I read Dickens & wrote. Mon: came in at about 7 from his hunting. Montie took me to his room & gave me 3 pretty shirts. Ivor gave me some Roman neckties. We had rather an amusing dinner but Montie chaffed Miss K all the time & Ivor was very low & quiet. After dinner I sat in the dining room talking to Montie and after for the rest of the eveng I sat in the Hall with the M. cutting out pictures for my screen– A very stormy night. To bed at 12–
