27 October 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 27th [October 1862]. Had a letter from A & Car—was very late. Ivor better today. At 12 went up with Blan: and printed till luncheon. After luncheon I went to the school where Ecca joined me. We heard that poor Gerard died last eveng. We went to call on the Pynes & I played “Zampa with Bessie & called at Whites. Came home & had tea in Hall. Directly after I went upstairs to print and found Ivor already at work. I set up 25 lines before dinner & dressing hastily got down in time for dinner– I sat between IBG & AEG. After dinner I got the boys to sing, they sang duetts and choruses and were very merry till 11½ when we went off to bed. When I came up I found my fire out & bothered over it trying to light it and determined not to let it conquer me & at last succeeded.
