30 October 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 30th [October 1862]. Sat in the hall & worked, then took Mrs H. & Mrs F to see printing. In the afternoon I drove with Mrs Hambro & Mrs Fetherstonhaugh to Henbury (the Parke’s) and finding the people at home they got out & I waited for them. We got home about 5 and had some tea. I then went to Luffs room & put up flowers in the epergne. I managed to get eno’ flowers by constant visits to the conservatory. The Adyes came to dinner. Mr & Mrs A, Mr G. Kelson & Miss Bateman, an old maid with corkscrew ringlets. Mr Adye did not come till dinner was over & Merthyr arrived fm town at the same time. During dinner there was some talk of mesmerism and Mr Kelson who is an adept in the art offered to perform on us. After dinner therefore, I, the M. Con: Mr Fetherstonhaugh & Mr Adye said we would be done. But it turned out a failure on account of the noise (Mr Kelson said) made by the audience. He took us into the library shutting the doors but he entirely failed. He said the M. would be an impossible, but I & Con: very good subjects. Made an engagement to go to see Mrs Adye on Saturday– Bed late. Went to Mrs Hambro’s room—had some soda water & sat talking with Mrs H until very late about poor Augustus– Monty & Mr Hambro went to Milton—they passed us in Wimborne as we were driving from Henbury.
