1 November 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 1st November [1862]. Was not so very late, wrote a note to Mrs Adye. Ivor tried to persuade the H’s to stay. They would not & I took them to the station at about 2. Saw Miss Charlotte Farquharson at the station and also Baron & Baroness Hambro and then returned. I went & fetched Mrs F., Blan: & Con: at the racquet court and we went to call at Merly. Con: played with Adye & we looked at the beautiful pictures. Hogarth’s marriage à la mode etc. We had some tea & Mr Kelson pretended to do something to the dog Wallace in the way of mesmerism & entirely cowed it by putting a collar round its neck. We returned at 6 and Blan: & Con: went to the singing. Practised my concertina till dinner & after dinner I & Arthur on the cornet played together, Ivor with the flute & Merthyr with the castanets, Mr F with tambourine made quite a chorus & a tremendous noise. Ivor was cross with me about my having sat up the night before. I went & put up Mrs F.’s hair and when I came back found Merthyr in Blan’s room. Monty afterwards joined us & we washed his head. He then jumped onto Connie’s bed and broke it—broke a water bottle & tried on all Blanches things. Merthyr paraded about in an Indian fur coat and high feathers. It was more than 2½ before we were all in bed & they had left. Luff & Arthur came up to search for them.
