4 November 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. [4th November 1862]. Not up very early. Ivor left by nine A. M. I had breakfast and all the boys came in to breakfast having been out riding. There was some playing of the piano and Monty gave me a sov. We 3 went to his room and tried on his clothes till he went out with the harriers with Merthyr & Mr F. We went with them to the stables to see them mount and then I went up to the printing room & collected all the copy that was about– It was then 12 oclock so I had just time to rush up & bid Mrs Whitelock goodbye before luncheon. Who should return but Richard Brown just a ¼ hour before we started. Mrs Meaby came up to bid me goodbye and Arthur came to the door to see us off giving us each 10/ to buy a present with. I went off in the dog cart with Blanche & Schrei. We just arrived at the station when the rain came down in sheets. I there saw Miss Charlotte Farquharson and exchanged a word or 2 with her. Luff saw us off and Con: gave me Hood’s poems which she bought at the station. We arrived at Waterloo at 6 having spent the time in reading, eating & sleeping and then came on to Putney where we found Thomas who came to be our maid in place of Trenfield. Arrived at Ex. Hse—I found a letter from Lady Louisa Pony & one fm Kitty. I felt so low I was obliged to go to my room lock the door & have a good cry and then I was better, brushed my hair and went down to dinner. It was very mournful nobody spoke and we all went to bed immediately after.
