6 November 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 6th [November 1862]. A most miserably foggy day, so foggy that we could not see beyond the balcony. At 11 we started in the carriage for London and went to Boors & I went to Anold and left my watch. We then went to Tarent and got some silver things for a present for Arthur & thence to the Exhibition. We went to Philips stall where we had appointed to meet him. We looked at the lovely Worcester enamel necklace which was in his case & wh belongs to Ivor. It is a lovely thing and beautifully set by Philips. As I was standing there Maud & Alice passed me & made me a sign of recognition. I recollected having seen them at Delplanques dance Academy. Philips then came and took us round. He told us that Ld Overstone had ordered a necklace like Ivors. He took us to see the Goblin Tapestry which is most beautiful, the French Emperors gold services, the onyx Algerian marble, the New Severe china and a parquet which Ivor is going to buy for Ld O beside many other things. Schr gave me an inkstand & I bought one like it for Arthur. We got home by 5 and Con: & I had tea in the little room. Dinner at 7. I played concertina & Blan: accomd me on the piano. I then played a game of backgammon with Temmie and after read out Martin Chuzzlewit till 12. Then to bed–
