7 November 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 7th [November 1862]. Late. Had a letter from Mr Adye with some autographs. I and Connie arranged the furniture in the sitting room and I put my books tidy. I played my concer: a little and then had luncheon. Directly after luncheon I dressed to go to Richmond with Con: in the poney carriage and just had time to go and see Mrs Keep before we started. We found Maria at home and saw the children & Susan. We had some tea and started home at about 5 bringing Maria with us. We met the M. & Schr out walking. It was very cold and we were glad to get in. Then went in to Ashburton Cottage to see the improvements which Richard is making and then Maria came in to our study & chose some photos: of Rd. She went up to the school room & I stayed to write to Henrietta. I then went to dress & to help Maria but she could not get the key of their portmanteau and had to break it open. I was a little late for dinner & found Arthur & his friend Mr Chapman, Richard & Capt Ed Du Cane had come. There was a great deal of talk about Col. Burnaby’s affair & other things, we drank Arthur’s health (he came of age to day) and had some cake. After dinner we sang & played till 11½ when they all left & we went to bed–
