13 November 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 13th [November 1862]. Down at 10½ and wrote letters and sat in the study all the morng. We had little Alice down and Connie put her to sleep at 12– Immediately after lunch Maria, I & Con: started in the carriage for town. When we got to Buckingham Gate we found it very slippery and saw more than one fallen horse. One of our horses nearly slipping down determined us to get out & walk to Philips. We then got into a fly and went shopping. Whilst at Marshall & Snelgrove we sent Connie on in the cab & the footman with her. We heard that she had not got far before the horse fell down and she was obliged to get another cab– We follow’d her to Portland Place where we had tea and talked to Bloss: & Moll: At 6 (the horses having been rough shod) the carriage came and fetched us. There was a tremendous yellow fog so we had to go very gently. Most of the omnibus conductors had to run by the sides of their horses to see that they did not run in to any thing. As we were coming at Putney Hill we passed the M. walking fm the station and picked her up– We found Hillyard had arrived—we were very pleased to see her– We had not seen her for 7 years– After dinner we went & sat with her & Ecca in the schoolroom & spent a pleasant eveng.
