14 November 1862 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 14th [November 1862]. Was rather late. When I went to the study found Blan: and Alice there, as she was going to put Alice to sleep there I took my concertina to practise in the schoolroom. When I got there I found Maria & Baby fast asleep so I waited till he was awake and then practised a little. Alice came to luncheon. After lunch Alice came to the study to play and about 3½ I went with Maria, Con: & Susan to see how the house, next door, was getting on. When we came home I laid down on the sofa & Maria sat there. I fell asleep once or twice till 5 oclock tea. Hillyard came down to tea & Temmie. We had hardly begun before in walks Ivor and had tea with us. After tea which was very cheery Ivor went & sat in the drawing room and Susan helped me to put our room tidy. We then put out the candles and sat in the dark as my head ached very badly. I then went up, bathed my forehead and dressed for dinner– But it was no use– I had not been a few minutes at dinner before I was obliged to leave and was very sick. Hillyard put me to bed and I slept till 11. When I woke up I had some arrowroot. Blanche slept with me–
