31 December 1862 — Uffington House, nr. Stamford, Lincolnshire
Wednesday. 31st [December 1862]. Directly after breakft I & Fel: went to set up the Christmas trees & Sir Rd Musgrave helped us, we worked all day till 5 oclock– At 6 some Voules & Trollops came– I had tea in the hall with all the children– Fel: & Sir Rd came out early & helped me to light up the tree & then the children were admitted. It took place in the music room. All the servants were allowed to see it and each had a present. After all the things had been given the room was cleared for dancing & we had Sir Rd, Mr Hunt come in the course of the eveng & we had supper & punch. The bells were ringing so when I went upstairs I opened my window & looked out—it was a beautiful moonlight night and I began thinking over the past & future till the cold air warned me to shut my window. Thus ended the old year & began the new one & may God be with us & direct us Amen. I then went & sat a little with Felicia. Mr W. Hetley came today. Lady Musgrave came.
