1 January 1863 — Uffington House, nr. Stamford, Lincolnshire
Thursday. 1st January [1863]. Was rather late for breakfast as I was rather tired—went to see Con: & Sir Rd play billiards until 12 when Felicia sent to tell me I was to drive to Burghley. We went there a carriage full—Fel: & Lady Musgrave—Miss Mus: & myself– On arriving we found Sir Rd, Uncle B. & George & little Montie W—who had walked over– We then went over the house– But I had seen it before– The pictures are very good there being a great many A. Kauffmans and particularly one of Garrick by her—wh struck me & Fel: as having such a likeness to dear Augustus– The bed slept in by Queen Elizabeth—her watch, the tree she planted, her bust are all to be seen at Burghley—also the rooms occupied by the Queen Victoria when on a visit there– We came back to luncheon at about 3 and then I, Felicia, Faukland, W. W. Welby, Mr George W., Sir Rd & the boys went for a walk going round by the canal & home up the avenue. We took the two dogs with us– Sir Rd took me in to dinner & Flamanck sat the other side of me– He & I had a long discussion about flattery—rather amusing. After dinner we played a game of post which lasted till bed time. I went & sat with Fel: & had some arrowroot with her. Mr G. Welby came in morng—he rode here–
