13 March 1863 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 13th [March 1863]. Was up pretty late and wrote letters in the morng. Connie drove Mrs Glyn to Hans Place in the poney carriage & brought home Mama, they came back just at the end of lunch. I was finishing my letters when Connie came running in to say Major Fred. Layard was calling. I went to see him & then we 3 went with him to Marias. Having sat there a short time we proposed walking down to the Station with him & were starting when Miss K. rather interrupted our harmony by rushing in to fetch away Blanche. We begged her off & took him triumphantly to the station. Miss K. came running after us and took B home. Maria walked into Putney & Connie & I waited at the Station with Major Layard. On the Hill we met the Glyns on their way up from town & also Mr Schr. We came home & found all at dinner at 5 as we were to go to the play. My maid being out we had rather a scramble having 1 maid between 4 of us. We 3, the M. & Mr & Mrs Glyn went and arrived in very good time. We went to see Lord Dundreary at the Haymarket and enjoyed it exceedingly– Mr Southerns acting of a stupid swell having quite passed into a proverb. The piece itself being nothing remarkable & alone attractive by Lord Dundreary– The chief charm of his acting being his gentlemanly way of doing it. Afterwards took place without exception the most stupid piece ever written called Rasselas. Not having one good point about it & then a rather amusing lively little piece called “Our Mary Ann.” We got home at about 1—and Blanche & I lit up my fire wh was all but out & I went to sleep at about 2½.
