27 March 1863 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 27th [March 1863]. Mme Dupouy came and I sang with her all the morng. The M. took Blanche & Connie with Mollie to sing to Jenny Lind but Blanche could not sing being so hoarse. She heard Connie & liked her voice & promised to give her some instruction. At 12 oclock Sir Richard Musgrave called wh was an unexpected pleasure and we made him stop to luncheon. At 3 oclock I had the carriage & took Maria & Allwood to town. We only went to Smiths & had our hair singed and were home by 6. Molly & I laid down on my bed & talked till dinner time when I did Mollie’s & Blanches hair & in consequence was late for dinner myself. At about 9 Mr & Mrs Otto Goldschmidt (Jenny Lind) came to spend the eveng & also Maria. I led off by playing Hellers Ondine & when Connie had played & Mollie sung Mr Goldschmidt played 3 sonatas of Beethoven most exquisitely, classical music being his forte. Then Jenny Lind sang us 3 songs of Mendlessohn which was indeed a treat. She made herself most agreeable & made no fuss at all about singing. She told us she had just lately seen the Queen who was most kind to her. She wished to present to H.M. Mr Goldschmidts new hymn book & as she said “No backstairs for me” she obtained an audience. She said the Queen shook hands with her saying—“Ah, many things have happened since we last met 11 years ago”—and again “There is not much to live for in this world” to which Jenny L. replied “Except the love of yr people” & the Queen answered “That alone supports me”– She then saw the Princess Louis of Hesse & presented her with a hymn book. We went to bed at about 1 oclock. Mollie came & sat with me.
