2 June 1863 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 2nd [June 1863]. Down a little late– Mrs Webber & Arthur being very late sat with them while they breakfasted. We went out in the boat with Arthur in the morng till lunch time. After lunch we went to the racquet court for a short time & then on the river– I & Nellie Scott went in the small boat with Mr Fetherstonhaugh and Mr Webber commanded the Una taking on board Mrs Webber, Mr & Mrs Digby– We sailed very nicely up the river but coming back we were obliged to row & I rowed all the way nearly. We came in to tea at 6 & wrote letters till dinner– Very amusing dinner. Arthur told stories the whole time about his acquaintance with H.R.H. Prince of Wales. He said that when driving at Cambridge the Prince wanted to pass him when there was no room & called out to him to let him pass—to wh HRH said “I shall pass you”—& Arthur replied “if you do & take off my wheel I shall send you in the bill.” Had singing as usual in the eveng & Mrs Digby & Nellie came to my room for drink & looked over our trinkets.
