27 November 1863 — Beenham, nr. Reading, Berkshire
Friday. 27th [November 1863]. Very late for breakfast. Sat working & singing all the morng—in the afternoon I, FEB & Uncle B went out to look for the shooting party. We walked a long way without findg them and at last came to a field where was a steam plough. We intended to see it work but after sitting waiting on the stump of a tree we were just leavg in disgust when we fell in with the shooters. We gave up the plough and went to see the shooting. FEB & I & Merthyr went together in to the wood & we 2 ladies sat in a ditch not stirg or speakg above breath for at least 2 hours while Merthyr shot hares & rabbits of wh he pocketed some 3 doz. He shot till quite dark & we then went home and had tea. After T FEB & I went to sit in Montys room & wrote letters till dinner. Merthyr, Mr Hutchins and Connie afterwards came up there– We were 16 to dinner. Mr Millar took me in—a widower & having besides lost 2 children, he was painfully dismal & heavy. After dinner there was singing till 12. To bed pretty early.
