28 November 1863 — Beenham, nr. Reading, Berkshire
Saturday. 28th [November 1863]. Breakfast at 8½. We started from Beenham abt 9½. The fly ordered for the maids not arriving we packed in Elizabeth (the M’s maid) & the other 2 ran all the way across the fields. We never expected they would come in time. At the station we met Mr Higford Burr. We went all together as far as Reading where we parted with the Berties & Merthyr & set off on another line to Dowlais. When we reached Gloster we found there had been a break down on the line from Cheltenham wh delayed us ½ an hour so that we did not expect to catch our other train at Cardiff. However we just caught it but the train being full we were obliged to travel 2nd class to Merthyr. We reached there at 4½ & drove up to Dowlais Hse by 5. Mr Thomas also came this eveng. After dinner Connie & Mr Thomas played a game of billiards against Schr & myself & beat us. Bed at 11.
