Monday. 7th [December 1863]. We had some games of patience & bagatelle and at 1 in the rain we set out to walk to Pent Llan to lunch with the Welbys. We had a very tiresome dirty wet walk (Amy Dillwyn, Mr L. Thomas, Connie & myself) and got there at abt 1.30. Mrs Welby a little old maidish lady recd us & Mr Welby who appeared (a very nervous odd looking man). Their house stands on a hill lookg down upon Swansea. We walked home directly after lunch and had a very noisy walk home laughg & chaffing each other the whole way. After having changed my boots I wrote letters. T at 5. Mr & Mrs Welby came to tea. Master & Miss Gulstone dined & an old Mr S E Thomas. I was very late for dinner havg stopped too long playg patience & grab with Amy. I sat between the 2 Mr Thomas’. We played round game of cards & I had great luck winning 3/6. As soon as the Gulstones left we played “Trouble you” till very late & got dreadfully excited.
