9 December 1863 — Singleton, nr. Swansea, Glamorgan
Wednesday. 9th [December 1863]. Rather late. Heard from poor Margaret & Emily Talbot. We played 3 games of 4 at billiards & my side lost every time; we went on till lunch. At 2½ I went out in the poney carriage with Dulcie Vivian; Connie rode with Etta & Mrs Vivian & the M drove in the brougham. We all went to the Mumbles where are the oyster beds and then Dulcie drove me to Langlands bay a little bay where Mr Crawshay has a villa. It was a lovely aftern & the sun at the Mumbles gilded in turns the distant coast (of Margam) then danced from 1 oyster boat to another & the bay was as calm as a lake. We passed on the road a very interesting lookg old ruined castle called Oystermouth but D. assured me there was nothing in it worth inspectg on wh head I had my doubts. T at 5. Miss E. Eden came to stay in the house a very interesting personage– We amused ourselves till dinner trying to say hard sentences, “Prestidigitation” being 1 word to be used over 10 times running & “Recherché Worcestershire Sauce”– Mrs Dillwyn, Mr S E. Thomas, Mr Wilmot, the Welbys, Mr G. Mansel dined. Mr Welby took me in. Connie played & Miss Vivian sang. Then we played a round game of cards & I won nothing, bed at 11–
