12 December 1863 — Park Wern, nr. Swansea, Glamorgan
Saturday. 12th [December 1863]. The M. Connie & I went over to Margam to spend the day. We went by the 11 Express from Swansea & the M fell in with an acquaintance, Mr Jensen. At Port Talbot the Margam cab was waiting for us. We found the 3 girls at home & Miss Neste. We had a very stormy meetg abt the Volunteers & Connie was elected one of the Corps. Our meetg lasted till lunch at 2 & after lunch I sang to the girls. Just as we were departing Mr Talbot appeared and went a little way to the station with us. Olive & Connie walked on the way & we picked them up. Mr Talbot went as far as the school. Our train was supposed to go at 3.31 but it did not come till nearly an hour after so I, Emily, Olive & Connie paraded the platform till it came. At Swansea we met Mr Wilmot but it was so dark we cd hardly recognise him. We had some T on getting home & found Mr & Mrs E. Vaughan had left Park Wern. After dinner I played and sang while Connie played Billiards with Mr Hussey Vivian. There was an alarm that the room Connie was sleeping in was on fire because the floor felt hot in some places. So they sent for the mason to come & examine and changed our rooms. They played billiards till late so Mrs Hussey and I went off to bed and I wrote 2 or 3 letters before Connie came up & was in bed & asleep before she was–
