14 December 1863 — Park Wern, nr. Swansea, Glamorgan
Monday. 14th [December 1863]. We started from Park Wern at abt 9 oclock & at Swansea station met Graham Vivian. Etta & Dulcie also came to see us off & Etta presented me with “Mrs Lirripers Lodgings”– G.V. went with us as far as Gloster & was very amusing!– At Gloster we had a glimpse of Lady Somers looking lovely. We got to town at abt 6 and drove across to the other station by Maidstone & got just in time to see the train depart in consequence we had to wait 3 hours wh was very uncomfortable this being only a temporary station. However to beguile the time I read out loud to the M (Mrs Lirripper) and we were glad when we had to go on our journey again. We went in those new saloon carriages. We arrived at Maidstone at abt 11½ & were squashed into a small omnibus—5 in a vehicle made for 4. wh was uncomfortable, especially as everybody was X tired & hungry– At 2 oclock in the morng we found ourselves at Leeds Castle an old curious place with a moat and having been let thro’ a dark old archway we reached the front door in the courtyard and being admitted by an old butler we were taken straight to our bed rooms and went to bed as speedily as possible; after having partaken of a little wine & water & a crust we willingly consigned ourselves to sleep.
