15 December 1863 — Leeds Castle, Maidstone, Kent
Tuesday. 15th [December 1863]. I had a splitting headache all day so that immediately after lunch I was obliged to lie down in order to get up my strength for the ball & dined up stairs. Mr & Mrs Wickham Martin were jolly old people, they have a daughter & one son who is married to a Miss Mott a nice little thing. Mr & Miss Turnour came to day for the ball & a Capt. Hayter besides a Mr & Mrs Naylor– She has the most wonderful waist I ever saw only measuring 16 inches—most painful & dressed vulgarly but quite regardless of expense. The ball at Maidstone was capital and there was a large party from Linton (Lady Holmesdale’s) which made it very jolly. Ivory was there from Linton. We got home at daybreak.
