15 May 1864 — 11 Cavendish Square
Sunday. 15th [May 1864]. Up in time for Church & went to Langham Place X with the M. and Blanche. It was dreadfully hot, quite oppressively so. Con: went with IBG to Portman Chapel– IBG went out to lunch. William Welby & Dick Preston came in towards the end of lunch. Mr Preston brought me one of those new doll tops wh we spun & watered the flowers. B & C went to All Saints at 4 with Schr. I sat in my sitting room & read & fell asleep till 4¾ when Ivor returned & I wrote in his room till Miss Rashleigh came—a pretty heiress of 15 years of age & I took her into my room & talked to her till Mr Rd & Lady Mary Arkwright & Mrs Stanhope came & soon after Sir Hy & Lady Rawlinson. We had tea & a discussion abt the Margaret St church & institutions. At 6.30 I put on my bonnet to drive down to dinner with Maria in IBG’s phaeton but finding one of the horses had loosened his shoe we were obliged to decide to go in a hansom but it was so long before one cd be found that we were obliged to give it up altogether and instead I went into the square gardens with Con: where we sat on a bench talking till dinner time. After dinner I reposed on a sofa, the M. played & IBG, B & C went walking in the Sqr gardens. When they came in I retired with IBG to write till a late hour whence to bed!–
