20 May 1864 — 11 Cavendish Square
Friday. 20th [May 1864]. I had a lesson from Gordini at a little after 11 till 12.30. Maria Strangways came to see me but would not stay lunch. Grannie Layard came to lunch and sat in my sitting room till 4. Ed Hutchins came & sat with us. At 4 I went out with Grannie in IBG’s brougham. Con: drove the M to the Chiswick Bazaar where the Polish ladies jewellery was sold & Blanche went to see the pictures in the R. Academy with Ed Hutchins. Gran: & I first called upon the Friths in Wimpole St & found Mrs & Miss F at home. We then went to shop at Cavendish House & stayed choosing Grannie a bonnet & cloak till 5.30—so we came back to T: Found Ed & Blanche, Miss Kemble & Mankie at T. Grannie only stayed a few minutes & then returned to Marias. Ed sat talking to me & Blanche & when he went I practised a little. B, C & Miss K went to the theatre to see Leah with W. Welby. After dinner I practised till I dressed to go out & then wrote some letters. There was a thunderstorm all the eveng. The M & I went to Mrs P. Ralli’s concert where we heard Mario, Grisi, Guglini, Mme Battelheim. The storm all the time was most vivid and some of the ladies becoming alarmed the windows were shut thereby rendering the rooms stiffling. We left when the concert was ½ over & came home to fetch Con: to go to Mr Rd Cavendishes ball. There we saw Mary Felmer & the Sandys, & Edith Turner, Vivians & heaps more and dancing a good deal staying till 2½.
