25 May 1864 — 11 Cavendish Square
Wednesday. 25th [May 1864]. Derby Day. I & Ivor went to lunch at Lady Felmers—met Ly Agnes Murray there. Mr Speirs called. I stayed till ¼ 4 when I went off in IBG’s brougham to Minnie Balfour but not finding her there went back to 106 Eaton Square & Minnie called for me there. We then went together in the carriage to see Miss Lumley (Augustus Lumley’s sister) and there we dismissed the vehicle. We sat for an hour with Miss Lumley who is still very ill and only just out of her bed on a sofa. From there we walked to Eaton Place W. to Ly Mary Arkwrights where there was an assembly of children & a conjuring performance going on. Old Mrs Arkwright was there, Lady W. Byng, The Ladies Pratt & Mrs Mitford. We had T. and at 6 the M came to fetch us. I went away & Connie stayed on to amuse the children. As we went up Grosvenor Place we saw the balconies full of people watching the returns from the Derby & we went down there again on purpose to see the Princess of Wales at Lady Fifes. She was sitting at the window. At 10½ I, the M & Schr went to Mrs Hussey Vivians concert. We heard Titiens, Guglini, Bettelheim, Santley etc. I sat next to Mrs Newton & Miss Barnaby. Saw Maria Strangways etc.–got home a little after 12–
