26 May 1864 — 11 Cavendish Square
Thursday. 26th [May 1864]. I went out with Blanche & Temmie to Cavendish House to see abt Grannie Layard’s bonnet—and to my gt astonishment found her & Mrs Cornack there. I helped her to shop & then brought her here and showed her the ball rooms & gave her a glass of wine. She went off at a little before 2 & I went to lunch with Susan & met Monty there. Came home & put up flowers to decorate the room. Then Kate arrived and I had to find her a dress for tonight. Then Maria came and carried me off to shop. We then had T. in Maria’s room, looked at the baby & sat in the schoolroom doing Double Acrostics till dinner. After dinner we sat again in the schoolroom until dressing time when I did Marias hair and then dressed for the ball. Baroness Hambro & her 2 brothers had arrived when I got down & after 11 the people poured in. I danced 1st with Rd Arkwright. At abt 3 we began a cotillion led by Harry Bourke who danced with me. But as he was rushing abt managing it I danced mostly with M. M. Law. We kept up very spiritedly till 4½ & went to bed tired out.
