17 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 17th [October 1864]. Connie’s birthday. At 12 I got some soup from Jane & Mr Schrei: drove me in the phaeton with Monty’s horses to Mrs Hayes at the top of the new drive. We then went on to Wimborne where at Mrs Housden’s I got some yarn for school knitting. While I was in the shop a most absurd procession passed by– It was Gennett’s Circus & all the painted people & be-tinseled horses went by with a triumphal car & a band—wh struck up with a loud “boom” just as they had passed the phaeton & nearly maddened our spirited overfed horses– When I had done shopping we drove on a little way to exercise the horses going as far as the Bankes new avenue on the Blandford road when we came back finding lunch ½ over. We took a hasty lunch & then Connie & I wound some of the new wool & at 3 went up to the knitting class at the school & then returned. I afterwards went up to Mrs Pynes but not finding her went to see Mrs White and on coming out from her cottage met Mrs Bankes riding thro’ the village. I then went on to Mrs Allen at the lodge & promised her some knitting. Came home to T in the study. After T I came up to my room to write & despatched a parcel to Mr Loosley. Drank Connie’s health at dinner. After dinner we humbugged with Flamanck & retired to bed at 11. The servants had a little treat in honour of Connies birthday. I read rather late at night.
