18 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 18th [October 1864]. Down to breakfast at ½ to 10 but made Elizabeth dress me. Afterwards I practised the piano till 11, when I went up & printed till lunch. I had a bad headache. After lunch I rested in the armchair till 3 when I went up to the school for the knitting class. I then went to the Pynes—saw Mary & sat a little with her. Came to my room where Con: joined me & we had T & talked & read & read letters. The M came & sat with us [passage in author’s shorthand]. Then Connie & I set to, & wrote letters. I did not go down to dinner but sat up in my room till bed time. Read “The Mysterious Marriage” by Miss Sinclair wh struck me as being peculiarly stupid.
