19 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 19th [October 1864]. Was called at 6 oclock and had breakfast at 7. Mr Schrei: drove me to the station where we took our tickets for Lymington. At Lymington we had to get into a small boat & be rowed to the steamer. It was rather windy but not at all rough. The wind carried away my hat wh was vexatious being the new one Susan trimmed. A kind passenger lent me a scarf wh I did not need as I sat in the cabin. At Yarmouth I went straight to the shop (Pinnock) & bought a black straw hat & tied a piece of blue ribbon round it wh cost me 4/6. We got a fly & drove to Freshwater & found Maria, Miss Kemble & Blanche at home and at breakfast. After having a 2nd breakfast I had a long talk with BVG about [passage in author’s shorthand] went up to BVG’s room & had a [passage in author’s shorthand] Miss Kemble & then called in Maria & [passage in author’s shorthand]. The discussion lasted till 12 when I went up with Schrei: to Glenbrook to see the Prinseps. Only saw Uncle Thoby & a nephew of his. At 1st Uncle T. did not know me & thought I was Blanche but on asking casually where I was I found out his mistake at wh he laughed heartily & gave me a kiss of reconciliation. He took me to see the source of the Yar in the willow bed just under the down & I then went up to see Mrs Cameron. Found she had just finished photog Blanche. We then returned to lunch & directly after I ran up to see if Aunt Sara had not returned. Uncle Thoby said she had not but as I was leaving I saw her at an upper window & she put her head out to say that she wd come down to see me—however I cd not wait & Maria & I joining Blanche & Miss Kemble at Mrs Cameron’s we went on to Farringford. We found all the Tennysons at home & A Tennyson in very good humour we had not long to stay & got into our fly & drove to Yarmouth. We waited at Y. on board the steamer some little time but made a prosperous journey home where we arrived at 6.30. Found Eliza Hill sitting with CRG on my return & CRG writing letters. I went to bed almost immediately after dinner as I was so tired.
