20 October 1864 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 20th [October 1864]. Down to breakfast at 10. Practised for hour ½ & then went to schoolroom & printed till lunch. Con: came up to say she had taken a telegraph message from Merthyr that he was coming at 2.40. Con: went to the station to meet him & I went to Mrs Allens to give her the wool for knitting and sat with her a little time—then I went on to the school. At 4 I went to Mrs Pyne’s & sat a few minutes till she offered to go with me to see poor Mrs Millay. We went there and then she came as far as the Lodge with me & there we parted. I went up for a little while to the printing & went to the study where we sat & read & had T. I then came up & spent the time till dinner in having my head washed. I sang a little & went to bed at 11. Merthyr [passage in author’s shorthand].
