19 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Monday. 19th [December 1864]. Rather late for breakfast, sat in the schoolroom & worked. Helped the M. to find things for Sophys bazaar. Con. the M & Schrei: started at 12 for Orton & Capt. E. left at the same time and Ivor went away for Canford. Maria came in before lunch and asked me to walk with her, so directly after lunch I went & fetched her and we walked to Roehampton and round home by the heath. Florence & Essie Pigou came for a few minutes after lunch to bid us adieu as they leave Putney tomorrow for good and all. After the walk I came and fetched Monk & we went & looked over Marias dresses for her. Dr Julius came in having been to see Blanche who is better today but not quite cured. I took 5 T. with Maria, played with the children and came home to dinner at 7. As we were sitting in the drawing room after dinner Blanche just going to play chess with Mr Flamanck, the door opened and in walked Ivor, he came back & is going to sleep here. He showed us a walking doll or “Autoperipatelikos” an American toy he has got for little Alice DC. I played some Faust & bed at 11–
