21 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Wednesday. 21st [December 1864]. After breakfast I ordered dinner at 5 and the carriage at 6. Blanche heard from the M forbidding her to go to the theatre. Maria came over during breakfast to say she had got the tickets for tonight for Woodcocks little game at St James’ theatre. I sat with Ivor in my room till he went to town by the 12.30 train and then I went over to Maria for a few minutes wh ended in my staying there for lunch and on till past 4. I made Maria a headdress for going over her back hair. I dressed and went down to dinner—Maria came over to dinner. Mrs Clark was to have spent the afternoon but did not arrive probably on account of the fog. We left for the theatre at 6.15 and called for Rd at the Conservative Club but did not find him so I, Miss K., Grannie & Maria went on alone. We saw 3 pieces—“The Baronet Abroad, or the Rustic Prima Donna”, “Sybilla” and “Woodcock”– Mrs C. Mathews acted in Sybilla and ranted horribly besides being vulgar & hideous & the piece most stupid. Mrs Frank Mathews & C. Mathews in Wood were excellent & we laughed immensely. We went straight to Henry Layards rooms and had supper—oysters porter & salad & were all most excellent & we got home at ¼ past 1.
