22 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Thursday. 22nd [December 1864]. Breakfast late. I practised this morng till nearly 1. Maria came over and had scarcely left when she sent me over a letter to say that FEB had sent word to say she cd not dine with her but wd spend the afternoon. I went in to Maria & found Alice singing her alphabet & hymns & returned to lunch. I sat & chatted with Grannie in the drawing room for an hour about Henry Layard when he was a boy & she told me some interesting anecdotes abt him and we also talked abt visiting the poor. At 4 I went up to practise when we got a message to say the Berties had arrived so Grannie & I went next door. We had some sleet but it did not last so we got over very well. FEB, the 3 children & Milord were there. I played with the children at tea parties & danced with them. At 5 we had T. & all the children in the drawg room. I helped them all & ran abt all the T. time. Miss K. came & Mr Flamanck and the Berties left at 6.30. Then Capt Eliot came over then Con: & then the M. and just as Grannie & I got out of the gate we met Rd & a minute after Ivor & Arthur. We came home & dressed and after dinner Ivor came in he played chess with Blanche—looked at the SH Society volumes wh have just been bound and sang till 12 when we came to bed. Sch: came in by a later train from Orton at abt 12–
