23 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Friday. 23rd [December 1864]. I came down pretty late for breakfast. The M., Sch:, Miss K. & Blanche went to London in the carriage and Arthur came by on his way to town from Horace Chapmans. He was introduced to Capt Eliot. After breakfast Arthur played & sang till 12 when we went together to Marias—found Ivor at breakfast & a brougham waiting to take him, Maria & Con: to town. Monty came next. He had come from town to ask me & Miss K to dine with him at Longs & go to the theatre. He, I & Arthur returned to Ex. Hse and had lunch with Grannie and Mr Flamanck and Grannie sat telling Monty all abt Waterloo—& how that her husband went over to Brussels in a transport with Grunow & Sir Thomas Pietern & 3 weeks afterwards returned to Ramsgate in the same ship with Sir Thomas’ body lying on the table. The boys went off to town & I went and practised in the schoolroom till Grannie came when I sat & chatted with her & she read me a letter from her nephew in Australia. At 5 we had T. and then I began to get anxious as the carriage had not returned– At 5.30 I dressed and it was not till past six and the fly had been waiting some time that they arrived. Miss K was abt 20 min: dressing & we were again on our way. We reached Longs at ¼ to 8 & found Monty, Ivor, Arthur & Mr & Mrs Hambro at dinner. We had a splendid entertainment and each a bouquet & then went to the Olympic where we saw a part of The Hidden Hand in wh Kate Terry acts and then “My wifes bonnet”—the apparently real beginning of wh terrified me—being a row in the box abt a lady in a bonnet. We returned to Longs and had supper & then drove home arriving a little after 1 oclock.
