24 December 1864 — Exeter House, Roehampton
Saturday. 24th [December 1864]. I was very late what with trying on dresses etc.– The M. & Schrei: had gone to town when I got down. I practised in the morng till lunch & Maria came in for a little time. Con: & Capt. E. went to lunch with Maria on brawn. Maria brought Alice & Dacre in after lunch and stayed till ½ past 4 when Maria & Alice went & Dacre stayed with me. The M. came home at 4.30. We had T. in the schoolroom & I sent Dacre home at 6. I then laid down in my bedroom as I had a bad headache all day. I went down to dinner & was better. I worked and talked to Capt E. & Con while she played and went to bed at 11 as my head was not better. While I am writing the bells are ringing to usher in Christmas Day and they began to peal exactly at 12. It makes me feel very melancholy. Christmas is not to me what it once was– Ah my poor darling Augustus. But Gods will be done–
